Mousetrap

With the following unfinished clip named “Mousetrap”, I attempt to create a sense of sad frustration and doom for the listener.

I have a few goals and concepts for “Mousetrap”.

First, my concept for “Mousetrap” revolves around a criticism against technology and the people “bound” to it. In this clip, I look at technology as a handicap for socialization, correlating this social sacrifice for a computer mouse in one’s right hand. The real mousetrap is not the small wooden device to capture rodents, but a “web” that has captured many victims already.

Second, recording-wise, I wanted to return to the basics, and for me this means MIDI technology. My MIDI rig creates a perfect triangle: Apple’s Logic – Motu 828mkii – S90ES. Instead of softsynths, in the spirit of simplicity, my S90ES synth is my main sound source, and trust me, this is an easy compromise because the S90ES sound bank can stand strong on it’s own. Only 5 MIDI tracks were created at this stage for the 5 corresponding instruments/patches you hear in the clip:

Only the cymbals from the jazz drum kit were quantized in the clip – I do that to create a sense of tightness that ensures the song comes together. Other minor edits were done through Logic’s MIDI event editor.

With 128-note polyphony, I have plenty of room to continue exploiting my MIDI track approach before bouncing to audio tracks. I may add actual guitar tracks and will most definitely develop a very simple (maybe repetitive) vocal track, though I like the instrumental feel the track has so far.

Additionally, I will be using this clip as a canvas for collaboration. My friend Amit Varia will partner with me for this project, but I do hope to collaborate with different musicians (ironically for this clip) over the internet for future clips.
